In recent years, discussions about China's Type 095 nuclear submarine have been heating up. Among the most closely watched aspects is its potential adoption of an "X-shaped tail rudder + pump-jet propulsion" combination design. If the relevant information is accurate, this means that China's nuclear submarines are gradually approaching or even catching up with the advanced attack nuclear submarines of the United States and Russia in terms of stealth performance, maneuverability, and comprehensive combat capability.

Traditional nuclear submarines mostly adopt a "cross-shaped tail rudder + propeller" layout, whereas the X-shaped tail rudder offers superior underwater control capabilities, especially in deep-water, high-maneuverability, and complex sea conditions. Its rudder surfaces experience more uniform force distribution, effectively improving the submarine's turning efficiency and stability while reducing wake turbulence, which positively contributes to lowering hydrodynamic noise. Currently, advanced submarines such as the U.S. Virginia-class and the UK's Astute-class employ similar design concepts.

Compared to the tail rudder structure, international community is more focused the "pump-jet propulsion system" that the Type 095 may be equipped with. Pump-jet propulsion is considered one of the key markers of modern nuclear submarine stealth technology. Unlike traditional propellers, pump-jet propulsion, through the coordinated operation of guide vanes and an internal rotor, can significantly reduce cavitation, lower noise generated during high-speed navigation, improve propulsion efficiency. Its stealth advantages are particularly pronounced during medium- to high-speed cruising.

Noise control in nuclear submarines has always been a critical indicator of a submarine's advanced level. In the past, the U.S. Navy maintained a long-standing lead through technologies such as pump-jet propulsion, floating raft vibration damping, and comprehensive noise reduction. In recent years, China has achieved continuous breakthroughs in areas such as ship fluid dynamics, ultra-quiet bearings, high-performance circulation pumps, and vibration damping systems, providing important technical support for the development of advanced nuclear submarines.

From an industrial perspective, pump-jet propulsion is inseparable from a large number of high-end fluid machinery technologies. For example, high-precision guide vane machining, low-vibration circulation pumps, highly reliable bearing systems, and complex flow channel CFD optimization are all closely related to modern high-end pump technology. This also means that the overall improvement of China's high-end pump industry, marine power industry, and precision manufacturing capabilities is becoming an important foundation for driving the leap in performance of the next-generation nuclear submarines.

In the future, as China achieves further breakthroughs in low-noise propulsion, hydrodynamic optimization, and advanced materials, the comprehensive performance of domestically produced advanced nuclear submarines is expected to continue improving, gradually entering the world's top tier.
