Title: Application of Silicon Carbide Ceramic Pumps in Industrial Fluid Transport

In the field of industrial fluid transport, highly abrasive and strongly corrosive media have always posed challenges for equipment operation. Many enterprises have found that traditional metal pumps or ordinary engineering plastic pumps often suffer from short service life and high maintenance costs when handling slurries containing hard particles or acidic/alkaline liquids, sometimes even disrupting production schedules due to frequent shutdowns. How to select a pumping solution that can withstand extreme operating conditions while offering long-term stability has become a focal point in the industry At the recently held 2024 International Industrial Fluid Technology Exhibition, our company showcased a series of silicon carbide ceramic pumps capable of transporting strongly corrosive media containing particles, attracting the attention of numerous professional visitors. At the exhibition site, a pump set simulating the transport of quartz sand slurry operated continuously for 72 hours, with only slight wear marks on the surface of the impeller and pump casing, while similar metal pumps under the same conditions exhibited obvious grooves. This comparison intuitively demonstrated the wear resistance advantage of silicon carbide ceramic pumps.

Application of silicon carbide ceramic pumps

For different scenarios, the silicon ceramic pump solution can be broken down into three key steps:  

  1. Material Selection: Using high-purity silicon carbide ceramic as the flow-wetted component, with hardness close to that of diamond, wear resistance over five times that of ordinary stainless steel, and excellent chemical stability capable of withstanding acidic and alkaline media with a pH range of 1–14.


  2. Structural Design: By optimizing the clearance between the impeller and pump casing, combined with the low friction coefficient of ceramic materials, energy loss is reduced by approximately 15%, maintaining high efficiency even transporting high-concentration slur.


  3. Sealing Solution: For the shaft seal area prone to leakage, a ceramic-graphite end-face seal is adopted, with a self-cooling circulation system, achieving a continuous operating life of up to 8,000 hours without external flushing water, thereby reducing maintenance frequency.



During the exhibition, engineers from the mining, chemical, and environmental protection sectors consulted on-site. For instance, a lithium battery material manufacturer mentioned that the impeller of their cathode material slurry transport pump needed replacement every three months on average. After learning about the corrosion and wear resistance characteristics of silicon carbide ceramic pumps, the company's technical director remarked, "If actual operation can match the stability demonstrated at the exhibition, this will be a key piece of equipment for us to reduce costs and efficiency."

Regarding common concerns, some users may question the impact resistance of ceramic pumps. It should be noted that while silicon carbide ceramic has high hardness, its brittleness also requires attention. It is recommended to avoid pipeline stress on the pump body during installation and to use variable frequency startup to mitigate water hammer impact. Additionally, for media containing large particles (particle size exceeding 5mm), a front-end filter screen is advised to ensure long-term operational reliability.
