Application of chemical process pumps in large-scale compressed air energy storage power stations

With the rapid development of the new energy industry, large-scale compressed air energy storage (CAES) power stations are becoming an important component of the new power system. As key auxiliary equipment for the stable operation of the compressed air energy storage system, "circulating water pumps, makeup water pumps, and miscellaneous pump packages" play a critical role in the cooling system, makeup water system, and drainage system of the power station, providing stable and reliable fluid transport support for the entire energy storage system. These pumps feature high flow rates, high efficiency, stable operation, and easy maintenance, meeting the requirements for long-term continuous operation of the power station. Additionally, when combined with first-class energy efficiency motors and intelligent variable frequency control systems, overall energy consumption can be further reduced, improving the economic efficiency of the power station. In the makeup water system, the makeup water pump is mainly responsible for providing stable water supply to the circulating water system, demineralized water system, and fire water system. Due to the high requirements for water quality and operational reliability in CAES power stations, it is typically recommended to use multi-stage centrifugal pumps, stainless steel vertical pumps, or high-pressure boiler feed pump structures to meet stable water supply needs at medium to high heads. Furthermore, CAES power stations also involve multiple auxiliary process scenarios such as sewage discharge, sump drainage, chemical dosing, fire protection, and emergency drainage, requiring a well-configured miscellaneous pump system. Common configurations include submersible sewage pumps, self-priming pumps, chemical pumps, magnetic drive pumps, and metering pumps to cover different media and complex working conditions. Given that CAES power stations typically feature "large capacity, long cycles, and high reliability," the following aspects need special attention during pump equipment selection: High reliability and continuous operation capability: Power stations generally require long-term stable operation of equipment, so the pump body must feature low vibration, low failure rate, and long service life. Energy saving and high efficiency: The circulating water system consumes significant power, so it is recommended to use first-class energy efficiency pump sets and variable frequency adjustment schemes to reduce overall energy consumption. Intelligent monitoring: It is advisable to configure vibration monitoring, bearing temperature monitoring, and remote operation and maintenance systems to achieve real-time monitoring of equipment status. Corrosion resistance and adaptability to complex water quality: For circulating water, demineralized water, and chemical media conditions, materials such as 304, 316L, duplex stainless steel, or special anti-corrosion materials can be used to extend equipment service life.
