How can a pump used in low-temperature processes ensure stable operation? An analysis from materials, sealing to structural design

In petrochemical, coal chemical, fine chemical, liquefied petroleum gas, methanol, low-temperature solvents, condensate recovery, and other units, low-temperature processes are becoming increasingly common. When selecting chemical pumps, we have encountered many customers who only focus on flow rate, head, and motor power, while neglecting the impact of low-temperature media on pump body materials, shaft seal systems, bearing structures, and operational safety. For low-temperature conditions, whether a pump can operate stably is not just a matter of "whether it can convey," but rather whether the entire pump can work reliably over the long term under conditions of low-temperature contraction, seal deformation, cavitation risk, and operation. In the design and manufacture of API610 chemical process pumps, Jiangsu Haifa Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. conducts targeted selection of low-temperature chemical pumps based on medium temperature, density, saturated vapor pressure, inlet pressure, net positive suction head (NPSH), on-site installation method, and continuous operation requirements. Common media in low-temperature processes include low-temperature methanol, liquid ammonia, liquefied hydrocarbons, condensate, light hydrocarbons, propylene, ethylene-related media, and some low-temperature organic solvents. Such media are often highly volatile and require high NPSH. If the structural design of a conventional chemical pump is unreasonable, issues such as cavitation vibration, mechanical seal leakage, and abnormal bearing temperature rise can easily occur. In terms of structural selection for low-temperature chemical pumps, we typically recommend API610 standard pump types based on the working conditions. For small to medium flow rates and medium to high head conditions, the OH2 center-supported chemical process pump can be selected; for high temperature differences, higher pressures, or main petrochemical unit conditions, the BB2 double-support process pump can be chosen; for high-pressure low-temperature conveying, multistage centrifugal pumps such as BB3, BB4, or BB5 can be selected based on parameters. the unit requires low-leakage or leak-free conveying, magnetic drive pumps or double mechanical seal configurations can also be configured according to the conditions. Our company's API610 chemical pumps can be customized based on project parameters, with common technical ranges including: Flow rate range: 1~5000 m³/h; Head range: ~1200 m; Design pressure: up to 10MPa or higher as per project requirements; Applicable temperature: -80℃~+450, with special design available for extreme low-temperature conditions; Pump structure types: OH1, OH2, OH3, BB1, BB2, BB3, BB4, BB5, etc.; Seal schemes: API682 mechanical seals, Plan 11, Plan 21, Plan 32, Plan 52, Plan 53A/B/C, etc.; Flow-wetted parts materials: WCB, LCB, CF8, CF8M,304, 316, 316L, duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, cryogenic metal materials, etc.; Supporting methods: explosion-proof motors, variable frequency motors, couplings, baseplates, cooling systems, flushing systems, instrument monitoring systems, etc. Material selection for pumps used in low-temperature processes is critical. Ordinary carbon steel tends to experience a decrease in toughness at low temperatures, so we select appropriate materials based on the minimum operating temperature and design temperature. For example, low-temperature carbon steel LCB, stainless steel 304/316/316L, or duplex stainless steel and Hastelloy can be chosen based on corrosiveness. The materials must not only withstand low temperatures but also meet requirements for medium corrosiveness, pressure rating, and on-site safety. For low-temperature chemical process pumps in petrochemical units, we generally consider material impact testing, welding processes, flange standards, and pump body pressure-bearing capacity simultaneously. Mechanical seals are another key focus for low-temperature chemical pumps. Low-temperature media can easily cause temperature differentials on the seal faces, and some media are prone to vaporization. Therefore, the seal scheme cannot simply copy that of ordinary water pumps or room-temperature chemical pumps. We select single mechanical seals, double mechanical seals, or tandem seals based on the medium characteristics, and configure appropriate API682 flushing schemes. For volatile, toxic, odorous, or flammable media, double mechanical seals with Plan 52 or Plan 53 systems are typically recommended to enhance seal safety and reduce leakage risk. During on-site use of low-temperature pumps, special attention must be paid to pre-start checks. Before operation, ensure the pump cavity is filled with medium, the inlet valve is fully open, and venting is complete; no dry running is allowed. For low-temperature, easily vaporized media, ensure the inlet pressure and effective NPSH meet requirements to avoid cavitation due to insufficient suction. During operation, regularly check discharge pressure, motor current, bearing temperature, vibration values, mechanical seal leakage, and flushing system pressure. Low-temperature chemical pumps are not recommended for prolonged operation deviating from the design conditions, nor for extended operation at low flow rates, as this can affect pump efficiency and service life. Based on our project experience, the key to stable operation of pumps in low-temperature processes lies in the accuracy of the initial selection. The more complete the parameters provided by the customer, the more reliable the pump design. It is recommended to provide the medium name, flow rate, head, inlet pressure, discharge pressure, operating temperature, minimum design temperature, density, viscosity, saturated vapor pressure, corrosiveness, continuous operation time, explosion-proof rating, and on-site seal requirements at the project's early stage. We will combine the API610 chemical process pump standard, API682 mechanical seal schemes, and actual manufacturing experience to provide a more suitable low-temperature chemical pump selection solution for the project. Low-temperature processes impose higher requirements on chemical pumps than normal temperature conditions. Jiangsu Haifa Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., in products such as low-temperature chemical process pumps, API610 pumps, petrochemical process pumps, high-pressure multistage pumps, and corrosion-resistant chemical pumps, can perform structural design, material configuration, seal schemes, and performance testing based on different unit requirements. We hope that through mature pump type designs and reliable manufacturing quality, we can help users reduce leakage risks, minimize cavitation failures, and improve the continuous operation capability of units in low-temperature process projects.
